historyofeurope:

The Congress of Vienna was held in Vienna from September 1814-June 1815. All of the participants in the Napoleonic Wars were invited, but most of the negotiations were handled by the “Big Four” - Russia, Prussia, Britain, and Austria. The goal was to deal with problems that had arisen as a result of the French Revolution, the Napoleonic Wars, and the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire - basically, to restore the balance of political power in Europe. The Congress of Vienna resulted in the boundaries in Europe being redrawn; among other places, France, the Netherlands, German states in the Rhineland, Saxony, and assorted Italian territories had their boundaries redrawn, while portions of Europe were carved into spheres of influence controlled by Austria, Britain, France, and Russia.
